On April 16, 2007, Economic Times (ET), a widely circulated business newspaper in India, published an article which claimed that Timesjobs.com (Timesjobs), a job portal owned by the Times of India Group (which also owned ET), had overtaken its competitor, Naukri.com1 (Naukri), a job portal owned by Info Edge India Limited (Info Edge) in terms of page views and number of active resumes, to become the top job portal in India.2

Timesjobs claimed that it had 150 million page views a month and 3.07 million active resumes, compared to its 'nearest competitor', which had 120 million page views a month and 2.73 million active resumes as of April 2007.3 Timesjobs also took a dig at Naukri when it launched a new advertisement with a tag line that said 'Everyone's Quitting Naukri'.

Sanjeev Bikhchandani (Bikhchandani), the Managing Director of Naukri, refuted the claims made by Timesjobs, saying that Naukri retained its position as the leading job portal in India, which was evident from the traffic share of the company, estimated to be 63%, as on April 26, 2007.4

Sanjeev also cited Alexa, a website that provided information on web traffic and comScore, an internet marketing research company, claiming that the reach and the number of unique users of Naukri was higher than that of Timesjobs.

Alexa in fact ranked Timesjobs at the fourth position among Indian job portals, behind Naukri, Monster.com (Monster) and Clickjobs.com (Clickjobs), on April 26, 2007.

Apart from Alexa and comScore, Juxt Consult, Topjobsites, Ranking, Quantcast and trafficestimate5 also indicated that Naukri was the top job portal in India.6
