popular arcade video game Pong, video gaming has become an increasing popular
pastime and has had a profound economic and socio-cultural impact in many
countries across the world. The advances in digital technology, mobile
communications and the Internet since the 1990s, have further fuelled the growth
of the global gaming industry.

As compared to developed markets like the US, where retail video
game sales (including console and portable hardware, software and accessories)
were over US$ 10.5 billion in 2005, the Indian gaming consumer market was quite
insignificant. In 2005, an ACNielsen report estimated the Indian gaming consumer
market at a worth of around US$ 50 million (US$ 15 million for PC gaming and US$
35 million for console gaming).
In-Stat , a leading provider of research
reports, stated that the mobile gaming market in India was worth of US$ 26
million in 2004 and was predicted to grow to US$ 336 million by 2009. Many
industry analysts opine that these low figures are indicative of the enormous
potential for growth of the gaming market in India...
